Crocheted Star Stitch
ROW 1 Begin in the 2nd ch from the hook. pick up this loop and four more (you will have 6 loops on the hook). YO, plt all 6. Ch1. This chain is important as it forms the centre of the star. You make the second star by picking up 3 loops from the star just completed. So with one loop on your hook now *pick up a 2nd loop In the Centre or ch1 of star just finished (2 loops on hook) Pick up the 3rd loop from the last stitch of the previous star. Pick up the 4th loop in the same chain as the last stitch of the previous star. Finally, pick up a loop in the next two chains for 6 loops on your hook. Yo and draw through all 6.* Repeat from *,* across. When you finish the last star, htc in the last chain of that last star. Tn.
ROW 2 Ch1 (turning chain) and dc in the same stitch. Dc in the centre of the star from previous row. *2 dc's into the next centre of the star. Repeat from * to end. Dc into the turning chain. Tn.
ROW 3 Ch2. In the 2nd ch from hook pick up a loop in the front loop of that chain. Next pick up a loop from the back loop of that same chain. You will now pick up a loop in the next three stitches(6 loops on the hook). YO and draw through all 6. Ch 1 (important as this forms the centre of the star). You will now repeat the steps as for Row 1. With one loop on your hook now *pick up a 2nd loop In the Centre or Ch 1 of star just finished (2 loops on hook) Pick up the 3rd loop from the last stitch of the previous star. Pick up the 4th loop in the same ch as the last stitch of the previous star. Finally, pick up a loop in the next two chains for 6 loops on your hook. Yo and draw through all 6.* Repeat from *,* across. When you finish the last star, htc in the last ch of that last star.

Tunisian Crochet in the Round
Crochet in the round involves using a double ended hook and two balls of wool. You begin as usual, putting loops on the hook with one ball of wool and then turning the hook and using a second ball of wool for the return pass. This might take several turns as you work with as many stitches fit comfortably on the hook at any given time. Because it is worked in the round, your first return pass stitch is through two loops, not the traditional one (used to create a border) and remains worked through two loops for the whole pattern.
This is a top-down, made in the round Tunisian Extended Simple Stitch pattern with raglan sleeves. I have finished off all of the edges with "hidden jewels" by using the crocheted Star Stitch. At the neck I've used only 1 row of the 2-row pattern repeat as I liked the softer, more feminine effect it made. I did the same for the sleeve cuffs and bottom, but did so after two rows of the 2-row pattern repeat. Because this is made in the round, the Tunisian Simple Stitch will appear staggered. The extended element of of the stitch (simply adding a chain after each stitch) adds both character and length. I don't often use variegated wool, but I fell in love with the muted, earthy tones of this one.
Ch 72( 72,72, 84,96, ) Slst into first ch to join. (you might want to put a stitch marker here for this first round).
Insert hook into the back bump of same slst ch and pick up a loop. Continue picking up as many loops as can comfortably fit on the hook. Tn hook and using the second ball of wool, begin the return pass until one loop is left on the hook. Tn and using first ball of wool, continue picking up loops and continuing with the return row until the Foundation Row is complete and 1 loop remains on the hook. Remove the Foundation row marker.
Place stitch markers @ stitches 13, 26, 49, 62. (for sizes XS, S and M), for Large (16,32,58,74), for XL (19,38,67,86). You will increase 2 stitches at each of these points to create the Raglan sleeve and Yoke (an increase of 8 stitches a row).
Begin extss in the round. At each stitch marker increase with the following: extss, tks, extss. Replace the stitch marker into the tsk between the two increases.
Continue in the round for 20 (24,28,32,36) rows (or until work measures about 26 [31,36,41,46cm] from neck edge) You should work all stitches but one off the hook.
Continue the extss until you reach the first stitch marker. You will now join this point with the second stitch marker, skipping all stitches in-between. This will shape the shoulder and sleeve.
Continue with the extss until the 3rd stitch marker and join it to the final stitch marker (skipping all stitches in-between)to create the second shoulder/sleeve. You can now remove all stitch markers.
You will continue in the round for the body of the jumper with extss. When your work measures about 47(52,57,62,67) cm from neck edge ( or about 20 (24,28,32,36) rows from underarm ) or desired length, finish a return pass so you have 1 loop on your hook at a SIDE seam.
***You will now begin the crocheted star stitch, working in rows.
First row. With 1 loop on the hook, under that same vertical bar, pick up a loop (2 loops on hook), pick up the remaining 4 loops using the tks. With 6 loops on the hook, YO and pull through all 6 loops. Chain 1......Continue with Star stitch pattern as written above, remembering to use the tks to pick up the additional 2 loops of each star.
After the HTC at the end of Row 1 of Crocheted Star Stitch pattern, slipstitch to join. Turn. Continue with Row 2. At end of row, slipstitch to join. Complete Row 3. Tie off loose ends and weave in.
Join a new piece of wool at the underside of the arm, leaving a long tail to pull together the small hole created by the underarm/sleeve join. Continue with the extss in the round. At every 5th row you will decrease by 2 stitches under the arm. I found this worked best by decreasing (yarn through two vertical bars at same time) , extss 2 , then decreasing again, always centred at the underside of the sleeve. You may wish to use a stitch marker to mark the centre and decrease on either side of this to be very consistent.
When sleeve measures about 40(42,46,50,54) cm from underarm ( about 24 (28,32,36,40)rows) or desired length you will begin the three rows of crocheted star stitch as worked for the base of the body. Follow from the *** above. Remember to start at the underside of the sleeve with 1 loop on your hook.
When you have finished with the sleeve. Use the long tail to whip stitch the small hole closed. Tie off loose ends and weave in.
To complete your jumper, join a piece of yarn and begin the star stitch as per instructions above. However, your first 6 loops will come from the stitches in previous row, rather than a starting chain. I found this worked best beginning at the back side, just above the raglan increases.
Slipstitch to join at the end of the row. Tie off and weave in ends.
