This knit-like hat is achieved through

Tunisian simple and full stitches and varied return passes, worked in the round. It makes up easily but it is important to pay attention to those different return passes to achieve the desired effect.

Simple foundation dc

Calculate a length of tail such that each chain required equals 3cm. Make a slip knot and keeping measured tail in front, *yoh, draw up a loop, plt both loops* Repeat * for desired number of stitches.

Foundation


Begin with the simple foundation dc (see above) and make 53. Join with a Slst into first stitch. Pick up loops in BLO, including Slst. You should have 53 vertical bars. Use the second ball, or other end to make a standard return pass (return thru 1, then 2) until one stitch is left on hook

Return pass: [thru2,thru3]. Repeat [] around. Repeat for15 more rounds.

Round 17

Decrease round. Always decrease with v-stitch to left. *tfs, tss with 2 ‘V’s together (skipping the vertical bar in between). Tfs.


Return: thru2 (this will be another thru 2 as previous round finished with a thru2), thru 4 [thru2, thru3, thru2,thru3,thru2,thru4]. Repeat [] until one stitch on hook.

Round 18

*Tss,tfs,tfs*. Repeat * around.

Return pass: [thru2,thru3]. Repeat [] around, ending with thru 2.

Round 19

Decrease round. *tfs, tss with 2 ‘V’s together (skipping the vertical bar in between). Tfs.


Return: thru2 (this will be another thru 2 as previous round finished with a thru2), thru 4,2, 3,2. [4,2,3,2]. Repeat [] until one stitch on hook.

Round 20

*Tss,tfs,tfs*. Repeat * around.

Return pass: [thru3, thru2]. Repeat [] around.

Round 21

Decrease round. *tfs, tss with 2 ‘V’s together (skipping the vertical bar in between). Tfs. Do not decrease last v-stitch, simply stitch as normal.


Return pass: (thru4, 2) repeat ending with thru 2.


Round 22

*Tss,tfs,tfs*. Repeat * around.

Return pass: [thru3, thru2]. Repeat [] around. Bind off stitches.

Finishing

Leave the return pass strand and leaving a long tail on forward strand, using a tapestry needle, weave thru tops of stitches and pull tight. On underside of cap tie the forward and return pass tails together. Weave in ends. Attach a pompom if desired.
