Pattern notes

This sturdy, but very lightweight bag is made using a dc base and then a more open combination of dc and long dc for the sides.

Special Stitches

Long dc

Insert into dc from previous row.

Surface crochet

With wool on inside of the bag, insert hook from outside the bag, draw up a loop. Again, from outside, Insert into next stitch, and draw up a loop. Continue as directed.

Using a 3 mm hook, ch21

Row 1

Dc into back bump of 2nd ch from hook. Continue to end. Turn.

Sides

Round 1

Change to 6 mm hook.

Long Edge

make 1 dc into each “ditch” created by dc of previous row. Place SM in first dc.

Dc around. (83)

Round 3

Ldc into first stitch, dc into next. Repeat pattern around.

Round 4- 19

Continue crocheting pattern in the round. Finish at the beginning side of bag.

Round 20

Dc around, put SM in first dc. Join with Slst to bl of first dc. Bind off and weave in ends.

Handles

Place a SM 13cm from side edge of bag, on front and back. Repeat on other side edge.

Before constructing the handles you will

surface crochet (see special stitches). From bottom corner of base dc’s, and using two strands surface crochet to SM at top of the bag. Chain 55, dc into next SM on same side of the bag. Then descend down with surface crochet to edge of dc base. In the same stitch, begin a surface crochet up to top of bag, following closely the previous surface crochet. Dc into top of bag, then dc into back bump of chain. Dc into top of bag and surface crochet down to base corner, following the previous stitch line. Continue back up to SM, dc across the dc of handle, dc into top of bag and surface crochet to the bottom corner. Tie off and weave in ends. Repeat on other handle.
